The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is organizing in collaboration with the South Sudan National Elections Commission (NEC), a series of BRIDGE training workshops aimed at enhancing the capacity of the NEC and equipping participants with the necessary skills to manage electoral processes effectively.
South Sudan’s Democratic Journey
The Republic of South Sudan declared independence on July 9, 2011. As part of its democratization process, the Transitional Constitution mandated the passage of an elections law within three months and the appointment of an independent election commission within one month. The NEC is expected to conduct by-elections soon and general elections toward the end of the four-year transitional period after a population census.
Future Steps
UNMISS and the NEC recognize the importance of building electoral capacity during this critical phase. This program will address various aspects of electoral processes, including the development of an election act, electoral reform debates, and the establishment of a robust election commission.
As South Sudan continues its journey toward electoral democracy, the BRIDGE training serves as a vital tool in equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure transparent, credible, and inclusive elections.
